How this prototype handles uncertainty
Two rules, different evidence
The outage window assumes the refrigerator started cold and its doors stayed closed. FoodSafety.gov’s item chart instead addresses exposure at 40°F or higher lasting longer than two hours. Neither rule supplies missing temperatures.
At exactly two hours, the chart’s longer-than-two-hours condition is not established. At exactly four outage hours, this tool shows the limit and CDC’s cooler-and-ice guidance. Exactly 40°F appears both in CDC’s storage target and in the chart’s exposure heading; ColdPause does not turn that boundary into reassurance.
Unknown history and uncertain conditions stay unresolved. A cold reading after restoration cannot clear earlier exposure. Chart “Keep” categories describe that chart only; they do not certify a food against every hazard. Unusual spoilage signs trigger disposal guidance. If in doubt about food safety, CDC advises discarding it.
Small by design
Household refrigerator power outages only. No freezer, medication, infant-feeding, commercial-kitchen, flood or fire assessment. Choose only an exact catalog match. This prototype does not assess contamination, prior handling, expiration, or individual health circumstances.
